So we thought a few other people might be interested in hearing our answers too. The SEE Science Center has always been located in Manchester, the largest city in New Hampshire and our character is influenced by our surroundings.
SEE is located in Manchester’s millyard. Built by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company who operated in the city for about 100 years, the company was once the largest textile manufacturer in the world. The millyard was built along the Merrimack River in order to use water power. The mills stretch more than a mile along the river and give our area a unique look.
Manchester is home to innovators. Two of the most famous are Dean Kamen and Ralph Baer. Dean Kamen invented the Segway, the iBot wheelchair, and the Luke Arm – and those are just the most well known, there are many more which are more important. Right now he is working with a large group of people and organizations to develop the technology to create an industry for regenerative medicine to supply tissues and organs to patients who need transplants. Ralph Baer is no longer living but is known as the father of video games. He invented the “brown box” console to connect to a TV and the game Pong. He designed many other games and toys. You can see and learn about some of their inventions here at the SEE Science Center.
